I love my Instinct 1.0's and was ready for some new ones. I was able to get some of the first releases and have given them a pretty good test over the last week and a half or so. I'm happy to say, it doesn't seem like they changed anything on the inside of the shoe. My feet still have enough room to... (Read more)
Best shoe I've ever run in!
By Rnnslow (Charlotte, NC) on Aug 24, 2012
I bought the original Instinct a 6 months ago after several severe foot injuries. I've now run in these shoes pain free. I've tried everything from orthotics, every popular shoe fad, to barefoot running to help me strengthen my foot but these are the only ones that work. Thank you Altra!
900 miles and still going
By WasatchWalt (SLC, UT) on Mar 5, 2013
6 stars out of 5!!! I run 50+ miles per week and have put 900+ miles on my instinct 1.0s. The outsoles have worn through in places but they are still holding together. I've run in various Brooks, Pearl Izumi, and Merrell shoes and these are by far the most comfortable and definitely have lasted... (Read more)

This shoe fits me almost perfect...I'm a EE foot, but Altra's shoe shape is a workable one for me. Having said that, If Altra would make a E or EE width shoe I would wear that instead. I love zero drop and all there is about the sole of the shoe. I am coming up on 300 miles and only have one complai... (Read more)
Seem shorter than 1.0
By Long toes (Detroit, mi) on Sep 24, 2012
I've worn 2 pair of the instinct 1.0 size 13 for the past year. I go between size 12.5 and 13 depending on brand. I love my 1.0s, but just received my 1.5s and am very disappointed to find them slightly shorter in length. The worst part is there is no size 13.5 so I will have to swim in size 14 or f... This is the best running shoe out there. After battling ITBS for over a year I've switched to the instinct and never looked back. I naturally run on my forefoot so the switch was easy. For those of you battling injuries these are the way to go. Get rid of the support that just weakens your feet and ... (Read more)
Best running show I've ever had
By PaulM (Maryland) on Feb 2, 2013
I converted to minimal running shoes almost two years ago. I first tried Vibram Five Fingers, but my goofy toes didn't fit. I switched to Merrell Trail Gloves and they were very well made, but weren't great for daily/long runs...I had issues with pain in the balls of my feet. I then switched to the... (Read more)
The mesh rips
By bnf (New York) on Feb 3, 2013
Lots of reviews saying it's a great shoe, but after 150 miles, the upper mesh rips and eventually it tears. Read the reviews on other sites and you'll see this is a frequent complaint.
When is this shoe going to be recalled
By Bret (Greensboro, NC) on Feb 5, 2013
I've bought two pair--both tear at 100 miles. I've called you and gotten no satisfaction. Reviews disappear that critize this shoe. I just want you to admit the problem and say what you're going to do about it. If I don't hear from you, I've have to go to the next step.
The Perfect Shoe
By JC (New York, NY) on Feb 6, 2013
I never written a review of a product online, but running in the Instinct 1.5 has been such an amazing experience that I feel like I have no choice but to post a review. I have incredibly wide toes and have struggled for years to find running shoes that don't rub painfully against my feet. The Altra... (Read more)
A shoe that really fits!
By steve (Santa Rosa, CA) on Sep 19, 2012
I got the Instinct 1.5 about a month ago and love them. The fit is perfect and the wide toe box provides a really natural and comfortable feel when I am running. I have been easing into longer runs and have had absolutely no complaints. I can't wait to take them out for my next half marathon. To my ... (Read more)
Alot more that I thought:
By running away (North Richland Hills, Texas) on Sep 20, 2012
WOW, I am totally excited about my new 1.5's. They are the best most comfortable shoe I have ever ran in. I have about 100 miles on them and they are tremendous. I suggest that every SMART runner buy a pair.
Good running shoes
By Ben (Queens, NY) on Oct 14, 2012
I run 4 to 6k 3 to 4x a week after biking. Once the shoes molded into your feet you can feel the diff bet your old shoes and this one. its like you are floating. I'm 55 and run aerobically at 6mi/hr and not feel any pain on my feet at all. I've spent hundreds of dollars looking for a good running sh... (Read more)
Review after 100 miles. All I can say is awesome!
By Chippiejoe (Mary Esther, Florida) on Oct 15, 2012
This is my second review after 100 miles on the Instinct 1.5. All I can say is the 1.5 is an awesome shoe hands down if you are a forefoot runner. It's hard to find a shoe that gives enough room in the forefoot area and still fit the heel area. I did use the recommended Altra lacing method and highly... (Read more)

I am just getting back into running. I have had this shoe for a month or so and it is awesome. I was having shin splints with my other shoes and found these and gave them a try. I went for an 8 mile run a few days ago and my legs felt great afterwards, minus being tired and that being the longest I ... (Read more)
What a great shoe.
By Gary (Port Charlotte) on Jan 10, 2013
This shoe is fantastic. With the help of these shoes and the LTR Initiative, my feet and achilles tendon have really strengthened with the use of these shoes. But beware, you need to take their advice on transitioning into these shoes seriously. I ran two miles the first night in them and I had a ve... (Read more)
Great CrossFit Shoe
By CrossFit Joe (Salt Lake City, Utah) on Mar 11, 2013
I have been doing CrossFit for about 6 months now. Previous to buying this shoe I was doing CrossFit in my old running shoes, which had a big heel-to-toe drop. These shoes make all the difference in running and in the average WOD.
Great shoe but poor durability
By ftan19 (Singapore) on Dec 31, 2012
I love the great fit, wide toe box and durable outsole. But I was greatly disappointed to notice tears on the upper mesh at both sides of the toe cap after 250 miles. And because material of the upper is so flimsy, the shoe is tearing apart fast with each run. What a shame that durability of the ... (Read more)
Finally, a shoe that fits!
By dfox (Salem, OR) on Dec 31, 2012
A year ago I bought a pair of instincts while trying to find a shoe that works with less-than-perfect feet. My toes are long and my foot is wide at the front, so common running shoes always left me with blisters and discomfort. With this shoe I have PR'd in both my Half Marathon and Marathon tim... Great other than the mesh
By Benjamin (New York City) on Dec 28, 2012
Like another reviewer I love these shoes but have noticed tears where the mesh meets the toe guard. I noticed them after about 150-200 miles. The tear on one shoe has become a rip. I hope they fix this, find a solution because other than the upper this is a great shoe. Comfortable ride, light for th... (Read more)
