Comments: In the real world I wear a size 12 shoe. In running shoes I wear a size 13 because I know the importance of having some extra room when the miles start adding up. My size 13 Altra Instincts are the best running shoes I have ever worn, by a wide margin. The Instincts are the shoes that made me Altra convert and a huge Altra advocate. They are the reason I was able to keep running when it looked like I was going to have to quit from nagging injuries that just wouldn't heal. It is no exaggeration to say that Altra is the reason I am able to run at all. I was giddy with excitement when my Ones arrived. I had considered moving down to a size 12.5 since Altra makes that size, but I decided to err on the side of caution and get the 13. They felt fantastic right out of the box. Maybe a touch big on my feet but I was expecting that. The first three miles in the shoes were absolutely glorious. Fast, light, effortless, and oh so comfortable. I was in love, just like I knew I would be. But by mile five my second and third toes on both feet were in pain. I had to stop, re-lace the shoes and pull out the footbeds for the run home. It didn't help much. Those toes were jammed up against the front of the shoes and the shoes weren't giving at all. The shoes are perfect in every other way. If I have to chalk this pair up to experience and buy another pair in a size 14(?!) then that's probably what I'll do, because I still love Altra shoes. The Zero Drop platform and the wide toe box is heavenly, and no other shoe compares. Discovering that my size 12 feet are too big for size 13 shoes... Not so great. But it will take more than that for me to give up on Altra. I can't speak for any of the other sizes, but if you're like me and love your size 13 Instincts, you might want to consider a size 14 in The One.
