Altra co-founder Brian Beckstead is a man of many talents and a man with many buckles on his belt. After countless races, one still remained unchallenged until this year: the Ultra Trail du Mt Blanc. Read from Brian’s personal account of his amazing trip to Charmonix and tackling of the UTMB trail. And if running one 100-mile race wasn’t enough for anyone, Brian is currently running the Wasatch 100. Two 100 mile races in two weeks.
Over the weekend, we saw two of our athletes podium at the Leadville Trail 100 in Leadville, Colorado. This grueling race sets runners on a 100-mile out-and-back course with elevations ranging from 9,200 feet at its lowest to 12,600 at its peak – lungs beware. We send a huge congratulations to our two winners, Ian Sharman (1st overall, 16:33:50) and Kyle Pietari (2nd overall, 18:16:02). This year’s race marks Ian’s second win at the Leadville Trail 100 and third consecutive Leadville race completed under 17-hours.
I’ve lived in the US for five years now and only missed one Rocky Raccoon 100 in that time. There’s something really fun about having a big winter target while most runners I know are just starting to build back up to get fit for Spring. Why do I keep going back? Well, it feels like it’s one of the classics of ultrarunning and is one of the older 100s (this was the 23rd year) with many outstanding performances over the years and a lot of top level runners have given it a shot.
Running 100 miles is a challenge. Running 100 miles in the mountains with over 26,000 ft. of uphill and over 26,500 ft. of downhill in one day is crazy . Yet, I decided to run Wasatch again this year even after last year I swore I would never do it again (read on to see if I’ll ever do Wasatch again). The start of the race approached and like always, I saw lots of friends and wished them a great day.
We had the pleasure of joining a great group of ultra athletes, including Altra ambassador Josh Arthur this weekend in Steamboat Springs, Colorado to follow along as he joined a talented crew of ‘hares’ in the beautiful 102 mile trail course through the Steamboat Mountain Range. The group of “hares” started at noon on Friday, with weather staying fair & trail conditions good the runners were able to cruise past their expected times and came into the first few aid stations over an hour ahead of schedule.
We had a BLAST at our first ever #RunTalks event! Special thanks to Wasatch Running Center for allowing us to use their location for the broadcast. When the Salt Lake Running Company began planning a 5k to support The One Fund Boston on Thursday night, they expected a turnout of about 100 runners. That expectation was met with an overwhelming support of over 1,000 runners ready to support the cause. We teamed up with SLC running co to spread the “keep running” message & sell the shirts for $20/piece with all proceeds going towards the One Fund.
Being in Boston when the bombs went off, and being apart of the running community, the Altra team feels deeply connected with the tragic events of April 15th, 2013. We were there at the finish line as the winners of the marathon broke the tape, etching their names in history. Few things matched the inspiration and excitement that pulsed through the crowd. We were also there when the bombs went off.
It has been a great weekend in Boston so far. The expo really picked up today which gave us a lot of opportunities to share the Altra love. There are still plenty of people out there that don’t know Zero Drop. Its motivating! We really do love what we’re doing out here. We’ve also had a chance to see a bunch of old friends and had some Altramaniac converts from other years swing by and let us know that they’re still hooked.
This was a tremendously fun event. There are two aspects to the event that stand out for me. ONE: Outrun Cancer / No One Fights Alone One of our Outrun Team members, Mike Shaughnessy was diagnosed with cancer this year. His outlook is good and his attitude is better. His attitude at facing this is not unlike the ultra mentality that he has. As a matter of opinion, I think that the ultra mentality is key.
Altra had the great opportunity to be the title sponsor at the Runner’s World Half Marathon and Festival in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania over the weekend. Over those four days, we had the chance to meet a lot of our fans and create many new Altramaniacs. Check out what we did: Thursday: We had a dinner at the Runner’s World Headquarters with some of the Runners World editors, staff and bloggers from the running community.
Last week, Altra had the chance to go to the Summer Outdoor Retailer Expo in Salt Lake City. We always love seeing familiar faces and fans of Altra. Nothing feels better than hearing stories of people running better, more natural, and healthier because they’ve been using our shoes. It makes all the work we have put in worth it. We were able to do some early morning runs with various brand representatives and retailers which was a blast (Not to mention our Helirunning experience with the guys from Runner’s World that you can see here)!
Altramaniacs! Altra is giving away free entries to any one of the following races in a town near you! To enter the raffle just visit our Facebook page and share our contest photo on your Facebook wall! Haven’t heard of any of these races? Check our a description of each below: The Dirty Dash: The Dirty Dash is a mud run obstacle course where a military boot camp meets your inner five-year-old’s fantasy and subsequently converts boy to man and then man to swine.
We were able to go and check out the Cross Fit Games in Carson, California at the Home Depot Center over the weekend, set up a booth, and watch some of the games. It is incredible to see how the sport has progressed and increased in popularity over the yearsApart from watching the games we were able to meet a bunch of you Altramaniacs, catch up with some old friends, and create even more fans of Altra!
The worldwide CrossFit Games are being held this weekend in Carson, CA. Altra will be there in full glory. Hopefully showing some new cool product as well. Are you ready?
Altra Zero Drop™ Footwear has partnered up with The Naked Foot 5k series to help with Soles4Souls and promote fun and healthy running. The title of the series does not say it all. This is a series that promotes better running technique, healthier running, and the ability to give back. We wanted to support them in their efforts as well as continue to promote our mantra of “Run Better, Run Healthier, Run Altra”.
Well this year we at ALTRA Zero Drop Footwear stepped outside of the running specific world and flew down to Southern California to take part as a vendor of the 2011 CrossFit Games. If you are unfamiliar with what CrossFit is I will quote from their site. CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.
Altra was in California this weekend at the IRHSA trade show this past Friday where a 5 person 62 mile treadmill race was taking place. Each runner had to run at least 1 mile before the next would take over. The teams were comprised of 3 men and 2 women while the Freemotion Incline trainers mapped leg 17 of the Tour de France which includes climbs of up to 30%!
The past couple of weeks have been filled with running education and we at Altra have played a big part. Last week Golden and I visited Wasatch Running Center in Sandy, UT for a learn to run technique class with about 30 people present. The class went really well with a lot of support and great questions. The next day Brian hosted the class at Bull City Running in Durham, NC.

Another test for the Lone Peak and another huge success! On Saturday I ran the Antelope Island 100k in Utah. Great course and lots of fun. I didn’t take quite enough food with me over one section which hurt my time but I placed 3rd in a time of 10 hours and 28 minutes. Zero blisters and Zero foot issues despite having a section through knee high marsh. For me, the Lone Peak is the perfect blend of cushion, protection, and lightweight flexibility that got me to the finish line with no issues.
Having the opportunity to crew and pace Brian Beckstead at the Wasatch 100 I was able to get a taste of the extreme ultra world. I was also able to grab some great footage of Brian running in the Lone Peak trail shoes. This Zero Drop trail shoe with an anatomical foot-shaped design provide the ultimate in ultramarathon design. Enjoy the footage and watch for the release of our footwear soon.
