Can I Put Shoes in the Washing Machine?

Dirty trail shoes can be a sore sight around the house. To clean them off, it’s tempting to just throw them in the washing machine.

It sounds like a great idea, but you should resist the urge to put your shoes in the washer machine. You risk damage to your footwear, especially if it’s equipped with important technical qualities.

Continue reading if you’re still not convinced about our answer to ‘Can I put shoes in the washing machine?’ We’ll tell you more about why you should keep your trail running shoes for men and women out of the machine, and provide some tips for proper shoe care.

Why Washing Machines and Running Shoes Don’t Mix

Washing machines on the hot setting will soak your running shoes in water that’s usually 130 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter. At any temperature, machine washing can break down the glue, foam, and mesh that make up the internal structure of your running shoes. If they look clean but the materials get worn away, that’s not a tradeoff you should make.

The structural integrity of your running shoes are especially important for technical footwear. Altra EGO™ foam, for instance, is engineered for lasting support. Our FootShape™ structure is designed for wear and tear by the mile – but not machine washing cycles. Damage to shape and support can diminish the benefit you get from a specialized pair of running shoes.

How to Clean Running Shoes the Right Way

You can still freshen the look – and smell – of your running shoes, without putting your shoes in the washing machine. Here’s how.

First, a note on timing. It’s best to clean your running shoes before the dirt and mud has a chance to dry. And it’ll give you time to air out your shoes in time for your next workout.

  • Remove the laces and insoles. Give these a wash and a scrub, and dry them separately.
  • Brush off dirt and mud. A shoe brush is great for this task, or an old toothbrush.
  • Clean by hand with warm water and mild soap. You might want to dedicate a sponge or cloth just for this task. Try not to soak the entire shoe.
  • Rinse off the soap and let them dry. Avoid drying your shoes in direct sunlight. To speed up the process, and help your shoes keep their shape, stuff them with newspaper or paper towels.

Bonus Tips for Tough Stains and Odors

Whether you wear men’s hiking shoes or women’s walking shoes, you probably put a lot of sweat into your training miles. That can produce odors.

Follow these tips to remove smell in shoes:

  • Baking soda is your friend. Sprinkle some into the soles of your shoes before setting them out to dry. Let them sit for at least a few hours, ideally overnight.
  • To be sure that your shoes are drying out completely, you can also put them out in direct sunlight. Too much of this risks excess wear and tear, but a few hours can help wipe out bacteria causing the smell.
  • Washing in warm water is good, but adding a gentle soap is even better. Avoid anything stronger, especially bleach.
  • If you’re wondering how to keep white shoes clean, the answer is: rinse and repeat. Frequent washing is the only way.

When you give your shoes a consistent and thorough cleaning routine, they’ll look and smell  great. And there’s nothing better than your favorite shoes lasting longer.

Stop Putting Your Shoes in the Washing Machine

You and your Altra shoes depend on each other. And, if you take care of them, they’ll take care of you. A good habit for health in your stride and longevity in your shoes is to rotate pairs and avoid putting shoes in the washing machine. Mixing up shoes will keep your body using slightly different muscles, which could improve resilience. Plus, giving your running shoes an extra day off helps reduce wear and tear.

To help your shoes keep their shape, remove the laces when they’re drying to let the tension out. It’s especially important to dry out your shoes as soon as you stop running. Chronically wet shoes can smell and lose shape more quickly over time.
