Do Altra Shoes Run True to Size?

Finding running or hiking shoes that fit properly is key to your comfort and performance. Whether you’re trail running, road running, hiking, or walking regularly, the right size shoes with the right level of support make all the difference.

But, with so many different brands out there offering different fits, designs, and support types, how do you know you’ve found the right fit for your feet? Do different brands fit differently? And do Altra shoes run true to size across all models?

From length fit to width and toe box designs, here’s everything you need to know to find the best Altra shoes for you.

Altra Shoe Size Guide Across Different Models

We went over Altra shoe sizes in length and width but do Altra shoes run true to size for different models? Altra shoes fit true to size in general, but the sizing can vary across different models. Some runners find that earlier versions of our Escalante shoes run slightly narrow, while Torin and Lone Peak generally run true to size.

We believe in offering the right running shoes for different types of feet. That’s why we have a selection of wide running shoes for men and women with wide feet. This includes Torin and Lone Peak styles made for long distance runners. Our styles prioritize comfort and performance so you can run without worrying about consequences to your feet.

Altra Shoe Fit & Sizing FAQs

Do Altra shoes run small?

In general, Altra shoes don’t run small. You can expect them to fit true to size. Due to our roomy toe-box and FootShape™ Fit, they may feel a bit more spacious in the toe area than you might be used to. But that’s a benefit of our unique design that’s meant to bring out your natural stride. On each product page, underneath sizes, you can see the unique product fit.

How do Altra shoes fit?

Altra shoes fit the way running shoes ought to—snug but not too tight, comfortable but lightweight, and built for performance and injury prevention. For runners who already wear trail running shoes, the size you currently wear will usually do the trick. If you’re more used to sneakers and other casual shoes, it might help to size up one half size or even a full size. Use our personalized Fit Finder, TrueFit, to find your size.

Are Altra shoes true to size in length?

Yes. Generally, Altra shoes do run true to size in terms of length. Most of our trail running for men and women fit true to size compared to other running shoe brands. But, if you’re used to wearing casual sneakers, you might want to consider going up by half a size or even a full size with your Altra running shoes. Sizing up is typically recommended for any running shoe to allow room for your natural foot expansion.

Shoe sizing is also different across different regions. For example, a woman's size 8 in the U.S. will be completely different from a woman’s size 8 in the U.K. For size chart conversions across countries, explore the Altra size chart guide for men’s and women’s shoes. Find exactly what shoe size you are by measuring your foot in cm.

Do Altra shoes run true to size in width?

You can expect the width of Altra shoes to be true to size. While our toe boxes are wider than most, that doesn’t mean they’re for runners with wide feet. We have dedicated wide shoes for runners with wide feet.

Altra’s shoes are designed with a roomier toe box than many other running shoe brands, due to the FootShape™ Fit. This allows your toes to splay out naturally, which improves balance, stability, shock absorption, and more. There are so many benefits to a natural toe splay, we wouldn’t know where to start. Just know that your feet will thank you for it.

So, when you buy Altra running shoes, don’t worry if the toe box feels a little wider than you’re used to. This is a good thing and will help to minimize blisters and toenail injuries, too!
