How to Prep for Winter Runs

Whether you love tackling trails or prefer to run on the road, you already know that outdoor running has many mental and physical health benefits. While motivation may be high during the warmer months, you’ve probably noticed that running in the winter comes with its own mental and logistical challenges.

Don’t let cold, wet, or unpredictable weather put you off. With the right gear, running in the winter can be just as enjoyable and beneficial as any other time of year. With that in mind, let’s explore some of the must-have shoes and clothing for winter runs.

WHAT ARE THE BEST SHOES FOR RUNNING IN THE WINTER?

While our road running shoes are shoes that are equipped for running in the winter, other styles might suit your needs even more. If you’re likely to run through a lot of puddles, heavy rain, or even some light snow, waterproof shoes can maximize comfort and dryness during your run.

Look for models with GORE-TEX uppers; these provide waterproof protection from the outside while still allowing sweat and moisture to escape from the inside. If you’re running in snowy and icy conditions, make sure your running shoes have plenty of grip, too. Our Men’s Timp 5 GTX and Women’s Timp 5 GTX are the prime examples of grippy shoes that provide waterproof protection for running in the winter.

You might also be able to wear your trail running shoes during winter runs. Depending on the conditions and type of terrain, you may want to consider different trail shoes for running in the winter. As always, you want to be able to tackle the trail with confidence. Shoes with proper grip and support are key.

In areas prone to snow, heavy rain, and mud, we recommend finding shoes with waterproof uppers. For excellent grip on wet and dry surfaces, look for models with Vibram® Megagrip. If you’re running on technical trails, make sure your trail running shoes are designed for that type of terrain. For similar features that’ll help you with running in the winter, try the Men’s Olympus 6 and Women’s Olympus 6 shoes now.

WHAT ARE THE BEST CLOTHES FOR RUNNING IN THE WINTER?

The best clothes for running in the winter often comes down to personal preference. Some runners get hotter than others, while others produce more sweat. Finding your ideal clothes for running in the winter might take some trial and error, but there are a few key factors everyone can consider.

For super cold climates, a thermal base layer like the Men’s Core Merino Wool ½ Zip or the Women’s Core ½ Zip Pullover can make all the difference. Look for long-sleeve tops with insulating yet breathable material. This is important because trapping cold sweat on your body is just as uncomfortable as letting rain and cold air in. You can layer a zip-up or hoodie on top for extra warmth.

Alternatively, if you tend to overheat, try an insulated vest instead. This will help to keep your vital organs nice and toasty without making you feel too hot overall. In wet and windy conditions, a Men’s Trail Wind Jacket or Women's Trail Wind Jacket is essential. Once again, look for lightweight materials that are both waterproof and breathable.

Remember to take care of your extremities, too. Running accessories like gloves and beanies can make a big difference, especially on those early morning winter runs. If your temperature or the weather conditions fluctuate throughout your runs, buffs can also be helpful and super versatile tools. You can wear them around your neck and face, wrap them around your head like a beanie, or both - whatever the weather requires. For a cozy feel from head to toe, make sure to grab some high-quality socks, too.
