Advice from mom
"Life doesn't come with a manual,
it comes with a mother."
How many of us have wished we knew the ways of the world, longing for instructions on dealing with everything life throws our way, only to realize mom was the one with the answers all along? This Mother's Day, the moms of Altra want to share their wisdom with you. Whether you have a little one to bestow knowledge upon or are looking for advice on how to be your best, these nuggets of truth are sure to remind you that mom always knows.
I constantly tell my daughter, “You are beautiful and most importantly your heart is beautiful,” because she’s so caught up in princesses and how they look, ugh!

In all circumstances, do the right thing. It may not be easy, it may come with sacrifices, but always work hard and be kind, be honest, and be courageous.

I talk a lot with my daughter (12) and son (8) about what running means to me, both as a runner and a coach. I recently shared stats with them about how few women, comparatively, run 100ks and 100-milers. They responded, "Mom, you do that!" and "You help other women reach those goals!"
This idea of finding strength—physical, mental, and emotional—is really what I hope to show them with my running. I want them to see that it's positive to aim for long term goals and to try new, hard things even with a risk of failure.

I think what I will tell him when he’s old enough to understand is to always find positive things to say about others and also speak positively to yourself. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you’re in a situation that doesn’t feel right. Be different and be a friend to everyone.

I tell Wren she’s beautiful all the time but that it’s more important to be kind and to help others. And that she is a badass. When my son was little, I told him he was a good leader and it was important to look out for people who couldn’t speak up or stand up for themselves. And to never be afraid to do the right thing.

My time-sharing miles with my daughter Abby is truly my most cherished time. I have always told Abby, “You can do hard things,” and a favorite T. S. Eliot quote: “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
She started going on adventures with me at such a young age that she never felt limited by things seeming to be too overwhelming (#zerolimits). I have always made sure that she knows how proud I am of her in all that she does, and greatly enjoy goal setting with her. I have always tried to instill fun and adventure into all of our excursions so that she is motivated to continue a lifetime of running and an immense love and appreciation of nature.
We are currently 43.4 miles into the GVRAT 1000K, so we have a full schedule of epic adventures planned over the next few months until we reach that finish line.
