LET'S TALK ABOUT TRAILS.

Trail running is more than just running. It’s exploring. It’s exhilarating. It’s escaping. Trails take us places both physically and emotionally, and fall is a wonderful time to get out and enjoy them. The weather is shifting, the leaves and changing, and the trails are calling.

There are great places to explore all across the country. But don’t take it from us—take it from our Altra Red Team athletes who have provided some of their favorite trails by region.

Singletracks and doubletracks, pushing peaks and pitstops, climbing hills and bombing descents, here are some of our favorite trails throughout the Northeast.

KATIE KLOSS

One of my favorite spots to trail run in the Northeast is the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, MA. There are over 100 miles of trails with lots of great hills and plenty of space to explore. The Skyline trail is a favorite—it leads you to an outlook with impressive views of Boston and the Atlantic.

CHRISTINE CASADY

Valley Forge National Park has a little 4-mile loop that I train quite frequently on. You can't get away from technical trails in PA, and this trail is no different. Full of rocks, roots, streams, hills, and beauty—it's my go-to for easily accessed local trails.

JOSH FIELDS

Stunning in all seasons and extremely runnable, this trail is a point-to-point ridgeline that runs approximately 14 miles one-way from Putney Mountain to Athens. You'll traverse several peaks through a variety of different forests with viewpoints in all directions. Throughout, you'll be almost on completely runnable terrain with limited elevation change. Truly described as 'rolling hills', trails like this are seldom seen in the Northeast. While I generally run this as a single trail, there are actually several points where you have choices, either to traverse the east or west side of the ridge or bail points to get down to the roads. In the summer, you'll see sheep grazing on top of Putney Mountain, as well as an uninterrupted view of most of southern Vermont and southern New Hampshire. There is an exceptional viewpoint to the east near the Pinnacle and incredible western views from both the Pinnacle and Paul's Ledges. Do you want amazing views, scenery, and trails while actually being able to RUN? This is your trail.

LAURA KLINE

Devil's Path in the Catskill Mountains is not for the faint of heart—it lives up to its name! Just over 24 miles point-to-point with close to 9,000 feet of climbing, it's considered one of the toughest hiking trails in the Eastern US due to the rugged terrain over multiple peaks. Both the men's and women's FKT's were smashed this summer, which is cool to see! I have completed the course once for fun and hope to go back and take a shot at a fast time.

HEATHER COTE

This iconic White Mountain hike is known for epic views of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, an area also known for the "Pemi Loop." The hike starts on the Lincoln Woods Trail and takes you to the summits via the Bondcliff Trail. I love this hike for its remoteness, historic rail trail, and epic views. From here, many iconic mountains in the Whites can be identified on a clear day. I have experienced both undercast and crystal-clear days here and it never gets old! It is a different hike each time.

ADAM RIBEIRO

My favorite trail is the Franconia Ridge Loop in the White Mountains, consisting of three mountain peaks. The climb to the top going counterclockwise will sneak up on you quickly towards the end. However, once on the ridge it may be one of the best 360 views you will get from the mountains, including the iconic sheer of rock from Cannon Mountain, where plenty of climbers go for long day of climbing. To top it off, you have the Greenleaf Hut with all the delicious snacks on your way down after you summit the last high peak out of the three. It’s one of the loops I always highly recommend to anyone going for the first time to explore the White Mountains.
