Western States Athletes Racing

We are wishing good luck to our elite athletes Keely Henninger and Kyle Curtin as they compete in this year’s Western States race. As these athletes prepare to take on one of the most competitive 100 milers in the country, we sat down to find out what they are most excited about, what their goals are for this race, and what shoes they’ll be wearing.

What are you most excited about at Western States?

I am so excited to be back competing against the best athletes in the sport at the most competitive 100 miler in the United States. The spirit and enthusiasm of all the volunteers and spectators at WS is next to none and I can't wait to feel the magic out there.

What is your goal at Western States?

My goal is to run the fastest, strongest race I can at the Western States 100. I know I have it in me to contend for the top spots this year and I can't wait to put all my training and learnings from last year to the test!

What shoe will you be wearing and why?

I will wear the Timp 4 because it has a great amount of cushion and traction, yet it’s light and nimble. It is such a comfortable shoe that will keep my feet happy for hours and a perfect storm for the faster trails of Western States.

What are you most excited about at Western States?

The stacked field of runners, the hype/atmosphere, and the opportunity to perform at the most competitive 100 miler in the country. Last year I got in late off the wait list wearing bib #387 and felt like an unknown runner. This year I'll have the M9 bib and I feel some pressure to show that last year wasn't just a fluke.

What is your goal at Western States?

The heat is such a wild card at this race, so it's tough to think about a time goal, but I want to run the best race that I'm capable of doing. Run smart and stay on top of calories early, survive the heat in the middle of the day, and to be in the hunt late in the race.

What shoe will you be wearing and why?

Lone Peak 6. They've been my favorite shoe since hiking the Appalachian trail back in 2015. I wore a racing red pair of LP5s last year and was happy with how everything went and the LP6 feels very similar with just a little weight reduction from the upper.
