Most Scenic Marathons to Run

While it’s become a lot more popular in recent decades, running a marathon is no mean feat. Although physical fitness, mental stamina, and the right road racing shoes for men and women are key to getting over the line—it doesn’t hurt to have an epic view for extra motivation.

Whether you’re completely new to running, have been running for a while and finally found your groove, or are a multi-marathon veteran looking for your next bucket list challenge, here are some of our top picks for the most scenic marathons in the US.

MOST SCENIC MARATHONS IN THE US

BIG SUR INTERNATIONAL MARATHON

Following the world-famous Highway 1 from Big Sur to Carmel, this coastal race is easily one of the most scenic marathons in the US. It takes place on the last Sunday of April every year and has a 6-hour course limit (a little over 13:45 per mile). It’s USATF, AIMS, and World Athletics certified, as well as an official Boston Marathon qualifier.

Scenic highlights include redwood trees, the Pacific Ocean, coastal mountains, and lush pastures. You’ll also run over the iconic Bixby Bridge at the halfway mark.

ANCHORAGE MAYOR’S MARATHON

This June marathon is a USA Track-certified event and another Boston Marathon qualifier. The route includes running through Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, Chester Creek Trail, Westchester Lagoon, and Far North Bicentennial Park. There is plenty to keep you entertained as you run with breathtaking views of the Alaska Range. You may even catch a glimpse of beluga whales, moose, and birds like trumpeter swans, mallards, and arctic terns.

BOULDERTHON BOULDER MARATHON

Have you ever wanted to run a marathon in “the happiest and fittest city in America” with the Flatirons as your backdrop? Look no further than the Boulder Marathon. With a marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k, and kids run available, this running festival is for all abilities.

Although it’s relatively new, this September running event has doubled in size every year since it began and tends to sell out quickly. Like all the most scenic marathons on our list, it’s also a Boston qualifying event.

HONOLULU MARATHON

No list of the most scenic marathons in the US would be complete without the Honolulu Marathon. Not only is it the US’s fourth-largest marathon (behind New York, Chicago, and Boston), but it’s also one of the most beautiful and accessible. There are no qualification requirements for entry, no time limit, and everyone is allowed to finish.

The course starts in downtown Honolulu and travels past Iolani Palace, the Christmas lights, Diamond Head, Kahala, and Hawaii Kai. Expect a supportive Aloha ‘finish at your own pace’ spirit and epic ocean views.

Temperatures can climb to the low 80s by 10 am. It’s best to opt for men’s running apparel and women's running apparel suitable for humidity.

PIKES PEAK MARATHON

Experienced trail runners looking for a steep challenge should check out the Pikes Peak Marathon. With a 7,800-foot vertical climb, this trail marathon takes you from Manitou Springs, Colorado, along Barr Trail to the summit of Pikes Peak and back again.

Grueling yet satisfying, this is a bucket list marathon for trail runners everywhere. Just make sure you have the right trail racing shoes for men and women.

GEAR UP FOR YOUR MOST SCENIC MARATHON IN COMFORT AND STYLE

Once you’ve picked your marathon, it’s time to get your gear and start training.
