Cold, Dark Run? Stay Motivated With These Altra Elite Athlete Tips!
There’s a chill in the air. It’s getting dark earlier. And all your excuses to skip a run are starting to creep in. How do our athletes stay warm, safe, and motivated in these tough seasons? Check out their tips for staying out there.
“I stay out there in colder temps by warming up with layers, layers, layers. Then once it’s time for the meat of my run, I get rid of most layers and just aim to keep my hands, toes, and ears warm. It can be a funny sight to see a runner in a sports bra, shorts, gloves, high socks, and ear warmers, but you gotta do what you gotta do!”
- Alysia Montaño
“I bought a roll of reflective tape to tag my running gear- both to be seen and to find my stuff! Ear buds, headlamp battery cover, and expensive small items are way easier to find when you drop them in the dark because your fingers are cold.”
- Kyle Curtin
“While Texas and other parts of the country may not have a true winter (it's our best time of year to run), it's still important to stay visible, especially on the roadways. There are many convenient options to add lights or reflectors to your normal kit.”
- Cal Neff
“If you’re running in wet and cold conditions, carry extra dry socks. It isn't cold if you are not standing still, so keep moving 😜”
- Jacky Hunt
“· Most recovery shakes can be mixed in warm (not boiling) water which is really refreshing and will warm you up after a long run in the cold!
· Create a routine. Having a buddy to meet you when the weather is less than ideal can really help get you out the door. Even if they are running shorter or longer than you, accountability goes a long way!
· Investing in a solid headlamp will make your life easier. If you are training for an ultramarathon, this time can serve as perfect practice for headlamp running.”
